ATTRIBUÉ À GIOVANNI BATTISTA METELLINO (MORT À MILAN EN 1724)
Precious rectangular box in rock crystal finely engraved and mounted in gilded bronze. It is composed of six plates of rock crystal of a remarkable purity, letting see the interior. Four of these plates (the upper lid, long side and short sides) are finely engraved with the wheel of scrolls in lambrequins and pastilles with insects on the rare inclusions. Moulded gilt bronze mounting and four feet in the shape of small horses finely chiselled. Milan, end of the 17th century, circa 1685. Height : 9,5 cm - Width : 14 cm Depth : 10,5 cm (Small scratches, tiny lacks and wear) This rare box is fully in line with an era when great collectors were multiplying at the same pace as the cabinets of curiosity, making it necessary to luxuriously display any new and precious acquisition. COMPARATIVES The Louvre Museum holds several objects from the Crown's collections that are the work of Giovanni Battista Metellino. These precious rock crystal objects all have a very singular engraved decoration which includes the mantling scrolls and pastilles that our box offers and which seem to be emblematic of Metellino. The comparison is particularly relevant with the engraved decoration on the sixteen-sided rock crystal bucket from the collection of Louis XIV (MR308).
