Bernard BUFFET (1928-1999)
Bouquet de roses, 1963 Oil on canvas, signed and dated lower right, stamped by the Galerie David et Garnier on reverse 65 x 54 cm 25 19/32 x 21 17/64 in. The still life is a true emblem of classical painting, which Bernard Buffet celebrates here by staging the magnificence of these roses, which are among his favorite models. Taking up a composition that he had already mastered, Bernard Buffet places a vase filled with three deep red roses on a table that he mentions without including it completely in the scene, placed in front of a yellow background drawn with a knife. Executed with a controlled expressiveness, the three roses compose the heart of the canvas. There are three of them, standing in their black vase. A quantity that we find in several of his paintings and which evokes, traditionally, a declaration of love. If the intense colors contrast with the thickness of the black material, the delicacy of the flowers is emphasized by the effusion of lines enhanced by the green paint. The entire canvas is devoted to defining the thorny power and beauty of these roses.
