RARE STYLOPHORE LION HEAD in sculpted Verona... - Lot 4 - Aguttes
RARE STYLOPHORE LION HEAD in sculpted Verona marble, the muzzle with well drawn nostrils, the eyes slightly elongated, a wide open mouth showing fangs. His head is surrounded by a mane with wavy locks. Northern Italy, end of the 12th century, beginning of the 13th century Traces of ancient restorations: deep hollows carved to receive the metal tenons that once held the head to the body of the lion. Height : 41 cm - Width : 40 cm Depth : 71 cm (fragment, traces of ancient restorations, homogeneous erosion, pierced underneath for pedestal) The use of a colored marble and the representation quite faithful to the morphology of the lion correspond to the representations adopted in Northern Italy. Similar representations in the treatment can be seen on the stylobate lions installed in front of the cathedrals of Cremona, Parma, Modena and the basilica of Bergamo or in the Collection of the Gardner Museum.
