No. 2760 Gold clock watch with double case made especially for the Ottoman market with strike/silent function Outer case on hinge, bezel and bezel decorated with diamonds, as the snap on the pierced and chased case middle, the back decorated with a trophy with war attributes, a crescent on the flags. Hinged inner case, richly decorated with a foliage decoration, a bouquet on the back, the pierced middle with "strike / silent" corrector for the ringing. White enamel dial with Turkish numerals, hands decorated with diamonds, one with a fleur de lys at the end, beaded minute track. Mechanical movement with key winding, dust cover bearing the inscription "2760 Dan de St Leu Watch Maker to Her Majesty London", chased and pierced cock, Turkish numeral setting disc, verge escapement with fusee and chain, signed on the plate identical to the dust cover, two hammers on a bell for the striking. Diam. 60 mm (outer case) Diam. 52,5 mm (inner case) Gross weight. 190.4 gr De St Leu, London. Clockmaker listed on p. 83 in the dictionary Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World, by G.H. Baillie, N.A.G. Press Ltd. Daniel de Saint Leu, clockmaker in London between 1753 and 1797, specialized in commissions for the Ottoman market. This piece is a very fine example with the royal inscription on the movement: "Watchmaker to Her Majesty" (the sovereign in question being the wife of George III of England). His most impressive timepieces, like this one made especially for the Ottoman market, are listed in prestigious collections like those cited in FJ Britten's Old Clocks and their Makers, p. 735, including the Bentinck-Hawkins and Hilton Price collections.
