Watch in gilded metal with a single hand with double reading hours and minutes, simple calendar Case on hinge with chased and embossed decoration, the cover representing the mythological scene of Samson against the lion, and on the back, Samson carrying the doors of Gaza, stylized bélière. Silvered and gilded dial with double reading of hours and minutes on a single hand, superimposed indications of Roman and Arabic numerals, single date on the circumference. Mechanical movement with key winding, pre-sprung balance wheel, chased and pierced cock setting disc, spindle and hose, verge escapement, embellished click, signature on the plate "Phi. Dagonneau à Grenoble". Diameter 47.5 mm PROVENANCE According to a family tradition this watch was bought from the Kugel Gallery. It is reproduced in F.J. Britten's Old Clocks & Watches dictionary, p. 175, fig. 219. It is described as having been part of the famous collection of Percy Webster (1862-1938), Great Master of The Worshipful Company of Clockmakers in London. The Percy Webster Collection, sold by Sotheby's, London, 27 May 1954. Philibert Dagoneau is listed in Dictionnaire des Horlogers Français, p. 153, Tardy. Son of Antoine Dagoneau in Grenoble, he married in Blois in 1656 and died in 1700. Also in the G. H. Baillie, Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World, p. 74, with a description similar to our example "Fine repoussé watch with hour figures I to VI and 7 to 12 over them, Webster coll."
