LÊ PHỔ (1907-2001)
Maternité Oil, ink and color on silk, signed and dated lower left 10 5/8 x 6 1/4 in Gradually, Lê Phổ becomes interested in oil on canvas which becomes an alternative to the work on silk, longer and more delicate. This evolution allows him a more gestural and immediate creation, as well as a more varied chromatic density. The Maternité that we present here is clearly revealing of an impressionist and nabis contribution to the work of Lê Phổ. His alert and rhythmic touch and the luminosity that he was able to infuse into the characters and flowers are very representative of this. While the canon of the protagonists remains invariably Asian, the subject matter and composition are inherited from Renaissance religious painting, inspired by the Madonnas with Child. On an ochre background, Lê Phổ establishes the grace and tenderness of the characters, which he emphasizes with the softness of three daisies, symbol of candor and innocence. Present in many of his paintings, the flower is a subject largely mastered by Lê Phổ. He made floral compositions one of his favorite subjects from the 1960s. All the virtuosity of the painter is established between the tenderness of this mother for her child, and the vivacity of the brush. The features of the young girl, her complexion and her hair reflect the canons of Asian beauty. Through a particularly mastered technique and a mixture of influences, Lê Phổ offers here a composition where his talent is at its peak.
