MAI trung THU (1906-1980)
Jeune fille à l'éventail, 1960 Ink and color on silk, signed and dated lower left. In the original frame made by the artist 26,5 x 19 cm - 10 7/16 x 7 1/2 in. Since the 17th century, the portrait genre has been one of the most noble. Providing its patron with a vindication, it has evolved over the centuries, allowing artists to express their creativity as well as their talent. Mai Trung Thu, an important artist of the Indochina School of Fine Arts, excels in this pictorial genre. La jeune fille à l’éventail is a striking example of this, whose Western framing evokes the art of portraiture. The model is in the center, within a clean background. Thanks to this choice of composition, nothing distracts the attention from this young woman with her gentle gaze. In the style of the greatest portraitists, Mai Trung Thu adds an attribute: the fan. As the only decorative element, it reinforces delicacy emanating from the work. The very fine line underlines the softness of the face. The gesture of her lovely hand is suspended and the fan seems ready to be opened and to hide this beautiful deep gaze. The very soft palette is skillfully enhanced by a touch of orange, framing and enhancing the beautiful ebony hair of the young girl. Taking up the Western codes of portraiture, Mai Trung Thu manages to lay down on silk a young Vietnamese girl embodying an ideal of beauty
