Le Pho (1907-2001) - Lot 13
Le Pho (1907-2001) L'attente, circa 1955 Oil, ink and color on silk, signed lower left, titled on reverse 24 x 16.3 cm - 9 1/2 x 6 3/8 in. Remaining faithful to his origins, the artist portrays a mother embracing her child, wearing a white turban, a typical element of the traditional Vietnamese dress. Thus, despite a modern technique inspired by European artistic currents, Lê Phổ remains attached to representing his culture of origin. The way the scene is portrayed is clearly indicative of a Nabi impressionist contribution. This scene of a mother’s embrace is part of Lê Phổ’s stylistic revival from the time of his arrival in France. It is characterized by a modernization of his style, with an increased vivacity and brightness of the colors, of which the fineness of the ink comes in some places to bring more precision. These improvements directly reflect the decisive influence of Pierre Bonnard on the work of the Vietnamese painter. Represented from behind, the characters linked by the tenderness connecting the mother and the child exclude the spectator from the scene. They are turned towards the red curtain which emphasizes the importance of the one who is expected.
