Manuscript-painting, confronting verses of Michaux, in the hand of Paul Éluard and 9 original gouaches, entitled "Some animals of Henri Michaux". 10 ff. in-12 square (16.5 x 12.6 cm). Bound in full orange box, author and title stamped in gold on the first board, smooth mute spine, gilt head, case (F. Saulnier). Some rubbing, small stains to the case. Superb poetic manuscript illustrated with 9 gouaches, forming imaginary animals in the form of Rorschach tests, with opposite Michaux's verses taken fromMes Propriétés(Gallimard, 1929 - included inLa Nuit Remuein 1935) and ofFantastic Animals(Plume1938) and written by the hand of Éluard. "The fever made more animals than the ovaries ever made. "La Grande guêpe-paradis. A toad is worth two wasps". "Deprived of water it dies, the rest is mystery". "Some ornaments can change their eyes for hours. One does not tire of contemplating them, "ponds that lived" says Astrose." "The Bichuterie of the flat and low Trèmes of the bugs" "The Darelette" " The Emanglom " "I can't make whole animals with one stroke of the wand... The Cartuette with its chocolate smell" [...], etc. The last leaflet bears these words: "We don't even have death to defend ourselves". Autograph of Éluard addressed to his daughter, Cécile Éluard (whom he had with Gala), at the foot of the last page, in multicolored pencil: "For Cécile's New Year's gift 1944", with signature in ink.
