L'Ancien marché aux poissons de Gand, vers 1910 Oil on canvas, signed lower right 55 x 45,5 cm - 21 5/8 x 17 7/8 in. "Torajirò Kojima was born in 1881 in Kawakamigun (today Takahashi, Okayama Prefecture/Western Japan). In 1901 he went to Tokyo, enrolled at the Tokyò Bijutsu Gakkö (School of Fine Arts) in 1902 and attracted the attention of the businessman Magosaburò Öhara (1880-1943), who became his patron. In 1904 he completed his studies, subsequently attending a seminar for advanced students. In 1908 he travelled to Europe on a stipend from Öhara. He first studied under Raphaël Collin, then transferred to the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten in Chent (Belgium). In 1912 he graduated first in his class and returned to Japan. From this point on, he continuously exhibited his works at the Paris Salon. In addition to his work as a painter, he also devoted himself to collecting artworks from abroad and disseminating them. After his death in 1929 at the age of 47, Öhara founded the Öhara Museum in 1930 in Kurashiki (Okayama Prefecture) on the basis of this collection and Kojoima's own work."
