TAILLEFERRE Germaine (1892 - 1983)
autograph musical manuscript signed "Germaine Tailleferre", Concertino for harp and orchestra (1927); one oblong folio of one sheet and 84 pages (unclipped, 1st page detached, some defects and traces of use, stamp of the Heugel Archives). Orchestral score of this charming Concertino for harp. It was during her third stay in the United States, during which she married the famous cartoonist Ralph Barton (1891-1931), that Germaine Tailleferre composed, in New York, in January 1927, this Concertino for harp and orchestra, which she dedicated to her husband; Germaine Tailleferre had learned to play the harp with Caroline Luigini-Tardieu (the mother of the poet Jean Tardieu). The premiere took place in Boston on March 3 under the direction of Serge Koussevitzky, in the presence of Charlie Chaplin who attended all the rehearsals. The public and the critics appreciated "its mischievousness, a little mocking, and this modern illogic, which combines the most daring dissonances with the most classical wisdom". But her husband was jealous of her success, and prevented his wife from going to work for Chaplin in Hollywood. The Concertino was performed again at Paris in July at the Koussevitzky concerts with the young Lily LASKINE. It was published by Heugel in 1928. The Concertino, with its subtle harmonies, its fresh and slightly acid colors, with a lot of spirit and charm, is in three movements: "an allegro of classical form, a lento evoking some oriental lullaby, a rondo" (Georges Hacquard); to use Darius Milhaud's word, "music that 'smells good'". The manuscript is in black ink on 22-line oblong paper from Carl Fischer in New York; it shows numerous corrections in red ink and pencil, and annotations; it was used as a conductor, with numerous annotations, and bears the stamp of the Sacem dated June 30, 1927. The first sheet gives the composition of the orchestra: 2 flutes (and piccolo), clarinet, 2 horns, trumpet, timpani, military drum, string quintet, and solo harp; on the back, the dedication: "to Ralph Barton G.T.", and the date: "New York, January 1927". The manuscript is divided as follows: I. Allegretto (p. 1-36); II. Lent (p. 37-46); III. Rondo (p. 47-84). BIBLIOGRAPHY Georges Hacquard, Germaine Tailleferre. La Dame des Six (L'Harmattan, 1998, p. 83-84). DISCOGRAPHY Nicanor Zabaleta, Orchestre National de France, Jean Martinon (DG 1999).
