MARTINU BOHUSLAV (1890-1959)
MUSICAL MANUSCRIT signed "B. Martinu", La Revue de cuisine, [1927] 53 pages in-fol. in 4 books. Ballet music in the jazz style. Composed in Prague and Paris in 1927, La Revue de cuisine [H.161is written for clarinet, bassoon, trumpet, violin, cello and piano, on an argument by the choreographer Jarmila Kröschlová (pseudonym of the writer Jan Löwenbach), who created the ballet with her troupe, in Prague in November 1927. This amusing fantasy features, in a joyful and whimsical love story, characters such as the Marmite and Lid couple pitted against the Cream Whisk, the Tea Towel, and the Broom, who takes on the role of arbiter of all these utensils. The original title was Temptation of Saint Marmite, and Martinu dedicated it to his Prague landlady, Mrs. Bozena Nebeská. The instrumentation is marked by jazz influences: rich harmonies and dissonances of the piano, use of the trumpet, pizzicati of the cello, as well as syncopated rhythms. Martinu produced a suite in 4 movements, given in Paris in January 1930, published immediately by Alphonse Leduc (publisher's ink stamp at the bottom of the first page of each booklet). The manuscript is in 4 books, each signed at the top and corresponding to a movement of the suite; it is written in black ink on 20-line paper, with numerous corrections. It includes all the parts: clarinet, bassoon, trumpet, violin, cello and piano. It has numerous annotations in blue pencil showing that it was used as a conductor. It includes: I. Prologue, marked Allegretto (March) (19 p.); II. Tango, marked Lento (8 p.); III. Charleston, marked Poco a poco Allegro (10 p.) ; IV. Finale, marked Tempo de march (16 p.). DISCOGRAPHY Christopher Hogwood, Czech Philharmonic Orchestra (Supraphon 2004)
