LISZT Franz (1811 - 1886)
AUTOGRAPHIC MUSICAL MANUSCRIPT, Mignons Lied; 4 oblong pages in-4 (26.5 x 34.5 cm) of a bifeuillet. Working manuscript of this beautiful melody on a famous poem by Goethe. This is the third version, elaborated by Liszt in 1860 [S.275/3], of this lied he started to work on in 1842, for voice (mezzo-soprano) and piano; it was published in 1863 by Kahnt in Leipzig. Liszt sets to music the famous poem of GOETHE, extracted from Wilhelm Meister: "Kennst du das Land, wo die Citronen blühn"... The melody in F sharp major, in 6/4 time, bears at the beginning the indication: "Sehr langsam, sehnsuchtsvoll"; it begins with a piano introduction of 4 bars. The manuscript is written in black ink on a 17-line bifeuillet (probably the lower part of a folio), on systems of three staves, with the lyrics above the vocal line. It shows scratch corrections, two bars crossed out, and one bar added in the margin. 20 bars have been numbered in red pencil to be repeated in the refrain: "Kennst du es wohl"...., before the 3rd verse. The manuscript does not include the repeat of the very last "Dahin!" on the final bars.
