AURIC Georges (1899 - 1983)
MUSICAL MANUSCRIPT autograph "Georges Auric", Les Matelots, ballet, 1924-1925; titled cover and 66 pages in-fol. (title folder repaired with tape). Music for this famous ballet for the Ballets Russes. It is for the Ballets Russes of Serge de Diaghilev that Georges Auric composed this ballet in 5 tableaux on an argument by Boris Kochno. The premiere took place at the Théâtre de la Gaîté-Lyrique on June 17, 1925, with the orchestra under the direction of Marc-César Scotto. Léonide Massine had signed the choreography, with Vera Nemchinova (the Young Girl), Lydia Sokolova (the Friend), Léon Woïdzikovsky, Théodore Slavinsky and Serge Lifar (the 3 Sailors); the curtain, set and costumes were by Pedro Pruna, a young Catalan painter. André Messager noted that Auric's music had "spirit, verve, fun"; it was published by Heugel in 1925 (stamp of the Heugel Archives on 3 pages). This manuscript for piano for 4 hands is written in black ink on paper with 24 lines; it is dated at the end in blue ink: "May 1924-March 1925. Issoire. Le Canadel"; it presents some erasures and corrections; it was used for the engraving of the edition. On the back of the title, Auric wrote : "To Madame José-Maria Sert / les Matelots / Ballet in one act and two tableaux / by Boris Kochno". The score includes 5 numbers : I. Les Fiançailles et le Départ (booklet of 20 p.), Allegro brillante : fi ançailles et départ des Matelots ; II. La Solitude (booklet of 7 p.), Moderato : the young girl waits for the return of the first sailor, her fiancé ; III. Le Retour - L'Épreuve (Variations des trois Matelots) (one book: title and 16 p.), Presto : unrecognizable under a disguise, the first sailor and his two companions try in vain to seduce the young girl ; IV. La Tentation (one booklet : title and 9 p.), Presto : the friend leads the young girl towards the bar where she wants to make her find the sailors, but the young girl refuses ; V. Finale (14 p.), Allegro : entrance of the Sailors who take off their disguises ; the young fi lle recognizes her fiancée to whom she has remained faithful ; salute of the Sailors.
