JUNG Carl Gustav (1875-1961) psychiatre suisse.
L.A.S. "Jung", Küsnach-Zürich 15.XI.1912, to Ernest JONES; 2 pages in-4 on his letterhead; in English. Important letter about his break with Freud, on the occasion of his book Wandlungen und Symbole der Libido. [Psychoanalyst Ernest JONES (1879-1958) was later to be Freud's biographer.] He regretted missing his visit, especially since he had neglected it, like all his friends during the past year. He was too busy with his work, but he never had a personal grudge against Jones. He was simply too introverted and dedicated to his work. The worst of it was that he clearly felt that this work was destined to destroy his friendship with Freud, for he knew that Freud would never agree with any change in his doctrine. And this is indeed the case. Freud was convinced that Jung was thinking under the domination of a father complex against him and that the whole thing was a nonsense complex. This could break him, if he had not prepared himself for it through the struggle of the past year, where he had freed himself from the respect for the father. If he wants to advance in science, he must follow his own path. Freud had already ceased to be his friend by considering all his work as a personal resistance against himself and sexuality. Faced with this insinuation, Jung is completely powerless. He can only regret not being able to express himself clearly enough for Freud to understand him... Freud agreed so little with Jung's work that he doubted that he would be able to participate in the new review that Freud was going to found. His name will therefore not appear in the official journal of the Verein, of which he is the president. In these circumstances, he must give up the presidency. If Freud understands every attempt to think in a new way about the problems of psychoanalysis as personal animosity, things become impossible. Jung will be happy if he can maintain the Jahrbuch. But Freud will even feel the need to drive him out of the Verein. It depends on how far he is willing to take this opportunity. Jung wrote to him that he was ready to maintain the situation and the joint work, even if he misunderstood it. This is the very unfavorable aspect of the present situation... "I frankly admit that I neglected you the same as all my friends during the past year. I was so very much occupied with myself and my work, that I hardly could maintain some indispensable relationships. But I never had any personal resistance against you. I was simply too much "introverted" and devoted to my work. The worst was, that I clearly felt, that this work was destined to destroy my friendship with Freud, because I knew, that Freud never will agree with any change in his doctrine. And this is really the case. He is convinced, that I am thinking under the domination of a father complex against him and that all is complex-nonsense. It would break me, if I were not prepared to it through the struggle of the past year, where I liberated myself from the regard for the father. If I will go on in science, I have to go on my own path. He already ceased being my friend understanding my whole work as a personal resistance against himself and sexuality. Against this insinuation I am completely helpless. I only can regret, that I am not able to express myself so clearly, so that Freud can understand it. [...] Freud so little agrees with my work, that I am doubtful, whether I can participate in the new journal he is going to found. If I don't participate my name is not with the official journal of the Verein. And I am the president. Under those circumstances I have to give up my presidentship. If Freud understands each attempt to think in a new way about the problems of ?? as a personal resistance, things become impossible. I shall be content, if I am able to maintain the Jahrbuch. As far as I can see, Freud will feel even the necessity to put me out off the Verein. It depends on how far he is willing to deal with opportunity. I wrote him, that I am willing to maintain the situation and common work, even if he misunderstands me. This is the very unfavorable aspect of the present situation.
