1966 FERRARI 330 GT 2+2 ex Chris Amon Série II
Bought new in 1967 by the legendary Scuderia Ferrari driver Chris Amon Restored with no limit from 2014 to 2016 Rare and elegant original colour combination (Griogo Fumo / Pelle Rossa) Ferrari Classiche and historical report by Marcel Massini Accompanied by its original purchase invoice French historic registration title Chassis n° 09213 Engine n° 2206 Ferrari launched the 330 Series in 1964 as Maranello’s follow-up to the impressive and prestigious 250 range. The first to emerge was the 330 America, which remained unchanged in appearance except for a few minor details, but whose «numerical» name corresponded to the displacement per cylinder. It would be some time before the Ferrari 330 GT 2+2 replaced it at the Brussels Motor Show. The aesthetic evolution is real, the lines are more modern, in the air of time and especially the performances soar. After a first series with four headlights, the 330 GT 2+2 Series II made its debut in 1965 with a front end redesigned by Tom Tjaarda of Pininfarina. Thinner than its predecessor, it relaunched the model as a sophisticated grand tourer - clearly from the Ferrari lineage with racing components - and as an important part of Ferrari’s lucrative and prestigious road car range, enabling its Scuderia to attract the world’s best drivers behind the wheel of its single-seaters. Chris Amon, the famous New Zealand-born Formula One driver, drove for Scuderia Ferrari from 1967 to 1969. Very quickly spotted by the «Ingeniere», he was only 24 years old when he took on the heavy task of defending the colours of Maranello in the Formula 1 World Championship. Talented, he signed some remarkable coups, such as the pole position and the best lap in the race of the 1972 French Grand Prix held on the Auvergne circuit of Charade, where he still holds the absolute record of the track at more than 166 km/h of average speed! He also won the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans in a Ford GT40 and the following year the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 1000 km of Monza in a Ferrari 330 P4. On the strength of his success, he soon ordered a Ferrari for his personal travels. As the copy of the invoice attached to the file attests, Chris Amon took possession of chassis 09213 directly from the factory in March 1967. Produced in 1966 with optional power steering, air conditioning and a radio console, this 330 GT 2+2 Series II was finished in Grigio Fumo with a Pelle Rossa interior, an unusual colour combination for the time but extremely elegant. In an email to the current owner, Amon recalled driving #09213 in Italy and England, and noted that «if Ferrari didn’t give their drivers a car, they gave a very good discount and I think I remember selling it for a little more than I paid!» According to a report by Ferrari historian Marcel Massini (attached), the car remained at Amon until 1969. Little is known about where the car lived in the 1970s, but it was found in California when it was offered for sale in the December 1980 issue of Ferrari Market Letter by the Fine Car Store. Stored in California for many years, #09213 was repainted in red like all Ferraris at that time, and enjoyed the favourable climate of San Diego before joining the current owner’s collection in 2014. Meticulously restored for over 18 months, mecha - nically and cosmetically, by a Ferrari specialist in France; the long process was photographed and documented step by step. The bodywork was stripped down to bare metal and restored to its original colour. The engine was completely rebuilt, as was the braking system and the entire wiring harness. The factory air conditioning system had been removed, but during the res - toration a correct unit was located, rebuilt and installed. The dashboard was also refurbished and the interior fully reupholstered in red leather to factory specifications by the specialists at the Atelier du Mont Ventoux in France. Superb in every way, this Ferrari 330 GT 2+2 Series II comes from what has been one of the finest Ferrari collections in France in recent years. Delivered with a substantial restoration file including invoices for over €200,000, photos of the mechanical and sheet metal restora - tion, as well as an extensive file tracing the history of previous owners, email exchanges with Chris Amon and his son James Amon. In addition, we will provide the purchaser with the Ferrari Classiche Certification of the vehicle dated January 2016 and of course a copy of the purchase invoice of #09213 by Chris Amon from the factory. Exceptional in every way, this Ferrari 330 GT 2+2 Series II was produced in only 455 of the 1,080 examples of the 330 GT that left the factory, making this the rarest version. It offers a unique opportunity for the discerning Ferrari collector to acquire a 330 GT 2+2 in superb condition bearing the exclusive provenance of one of the world’s greatest Formula 1 drivers and victorious endurance racers.
