1955 FIAT 1400A
Emblematic model of the brand Remarkable performances for its category Moving condition of presentation No registration title Chassis n° 101A*088588* At the 1950 Geneva Motor Show, Fiat presented an entirely new car: the 1400, first Fiat with a self-supporting body (instead of a traditional chassis) and a modern pontoon line with integrated wings. It was also the first car to be designed entirely after the Second World War and to benefit from such new technologies. It gave a real facelift to the Fiat range, which until then had consisted of the ageing 500 Topolino and the 1100. The new car could be produced quickly in the Mirafiori plant, which had been refurbished with Marshall Plan funds: American Budd presses gave shape to the new 1400. This upper-middle range (4.31 m long) was offered as a 4-door sedan and a 2-door convertible until 1954. Then came the modified version: the 1400 A. With its supersquare engine, power was increased from 45 to 50 hp. It was able to transport six people and their luggage at a speed of 125 km/h while consuming only about ten liters per hundred kilometers. The rear axle, technically original, combines leaf and coil springs. The windshield and rear window are equipped with a curved safety glass and a modern heating and ventilation system is fitted as standard. Fiat also boasted of mechanical units that were clearly distinct from each other and easily removable. By unscrewing eighteen bolts without touching any part of the bodywork, all the mechanical parts could be detached. It was replaced in 1956 by the 1400 B. The Fiat 1400 A that illustrates these pages is in a beautiful state of preservation. The paint seems to have been redone, in its original color, but the interior, made of fabrics, presents some defects due to the passing of time, is authentic. The atmosphere breathes the austere and hard-working Italy of the 1950s. The car is sound and is the ideal candidate for an easy restart.
