1996 BENTLEY TURBO R SPORT
Confidential production, 20 units worldwide Ideal configuration Clear history French registration title Chassis n° SCBZR15C5TCX57830 At the 1985 Geneva Motor Show, Bentley presented the replacement for the Mulsanne, a large, luxurious and sporty saloon, renamed the Turbo R. This new car shared the same base as its older sister, but with a new look. As a tradition of the venerable British brand, the emphasis was placed on improving comfort and handling, which explains the appearance of the «R» for «Roadholding». It was an immediate success and Motor Trend magazine described it as «the first Bentley in decades to live up to its name». A first sports version of the Turbo R was introduced in 1995 as the Turbo S. Seventy-five cars were produced, with the engine increased to 400 hp. In 1996, the Turbo R received a number of styling improvements and another sporty version was introduced. The suspension was slightly stiffened and the interior was finished with carbon fibre. Only tewenty cars were produced, twelve of them with a wooden interior. This time the 385 hp V8 Turbo, more traditional of the other Turbo R cars, was used. Production of the Turbo R ended in 1997 when the brand was taken over by the Volkswagen Group. The Turbo R was then replaced by the Arnage. The car we are presenting is one of only twenty Turbo R Sport cars ever built. There were also three long and seventeen short chassis in the series, the ultimate. Thirteen of these short chassis were sold in Germany, three in Japan and... one in Monaco. This is the car that illustrates these pages. The original purchase invoice, attached to the file, shows the car’s configuration: «Black Emerald» body colour and «Sandstone» leather interior. The perfect configuration for a British car of this category. In 2005, the car was imported to France by an enlightened enthusiast, while its odometer showed 75,800 km. A Histovec search allows us to verify its current mileage of 139,500 km. This car is today in a beautiful state of cosmetic preservation. The bodywork shows few defects and the interior seems to have been carefully maintained, even if the radio and the electric seats are defective. A service was carried out at the beginning of the year to revive our English car after five years of immobilisation. The last technical inspection, carried out in February of this year, revealed some critical and major defects: significant play in the steering rack, oil leakage, air suspension to be reviewed. A few defects that will not scare the connoisseur, who will be able to detect all the potential of this rare and noble thoroughbred.
