1999 BMW Z3 M COUPÉ
Less than 62,000 km 2,999 units Superb configuration Japanese registration title Customs cleared vehicle Chassis n° WBSCM91070LB55997 It is infrequent that a coupé is derived from a cabriolet : it is more often the opposite. In fact, the coupé version of the Z3 should not have existed in the first place. The idea came from a small team at BMW Motorsport GmbH, the primary purpose being to offer a stiffer chassis than the Z3 Roadster. At first, the brand’s management rejected the project as unprofitable and a source of internal competition with the existing M3 E36 coupe. To reduce costs, Motorsport decided that the Z3 Coupé - which was still a strict two-seater - would use as many parts as possible from the roadster. In addition to the Motorsport block, it would also receive the 2.8 6-cylinder engine in order to achieve sufficient production volumes. After much persuasion, the project was approved by the management. Chris Bangle took over as head of BMW design in 1992, and in the process, he and his team transformed the roadster from a coupé into a small hatchback with the advantage of a large boot. Presented at the 1997 Frankfurt Motor Show, it kept its squalid face to which the grafting of a cabin with receding lines gave it one of the most distinctive faces of the late 20th century. While in spirit it may recall the MGB GT, the Z3 Coupé stands out from anything else that was available in the 1990s. Produced in less than three years with 18,000 units, the Z3 Coupé is already a collector’s item. The M version with its first-generation S50 engine, coming from the M3 E36 3.2l (3.2l and 321hp), was produced in only 2,999 units. Sold new in Japan, this model with the legendary S50B32 block was launched on 11th March 1999. It was imported to France in 2018, has been cleared through customs and has a certificate of conformity allowing it to obtain a French registration document. All the documents in Japanese are present and its condition is very good. Aesthetically, it’s Estoril blue body is in a superb condition. The interior is not to be outdone, the two-tone Estoril blue and black Nappa leather upholstery is perfectly preserved. The same goes for the doors and the roof lining. It should be noted that our car is equipped with a sunroof. The car’s mechanics were revised in October 2021 and the odometer showed 61,384 km. The car is sound and mechanically very strong, and neither the driving position nor gearbox handling is tiring. This car is as sensational to drive as it is to look at, more rigorous than the roadster but still folksy and engaging. Not failing to turn heads as it passes, we can say that the Z3 M Coupé is very clearly a car to be collected urgently. This low mileage example is a «must have», trust us!
