1982 AUDI QUATTRO
New engine Real iconic car Rally legend French registration title Chassis n° WAUZZZ85ZDA900933 Until relatively recently, and apart from a few prestigious exceptions, including a handful of Formula 1 cars, all-wheel drive was mainly reserved for agricultural or construction machinery. It was while preparing a lecture on the technology of rear-wheel drive compared to front-wheel drive that an Audi engineer, Jörg Bensinger, had the idea of bringing this practice back to touring cars. The project started in March 1977 when the technicians of the ringed brand equipped an Audi 80 with an off-road 4x4 transmission of Volkswagen origin manufactured for the German army. During the year, a 5-cylinder turbocharged engine developing 200 horsepower was installed. After miles and miles of testing on the world’s toughest roads, the Audi Quattro coupe was officially launched at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1980. Its production launch was accompanied by its debut in the World Rally Championship in 1981, the first season in which it won the Swedish Rally and the San Remo Rally. In its second appearance, Audi won the World Rally Championship and opened the door to a golden era of victories in the legendary Group B cars. The Quattro coupé was to undergo two major changes with the MB in 1987, which saw its capacity increase from 2.1 to 2.2 l, and the RR in 1990, which received a 20-valve cylinder head. Its production will stop in 1991 with nearly 11 500 units manufactured. Of Swiss origin, our example was put into circulation in the canton of Vaud on 8th December 1982. It was then imported into France in 1997 and is said to be a second hand car today. With a little more than 180,000 km, it has an Alpine white body which was repainted about 20 years ago, although some traces of corrosion can be seen. Inside, the cabin is still in its original state, with the velvet upholstery characteristic of the model with its green and brown stripes. There is also a digital dashboard, a forerunner at the time, and the famous pull tab for locking the front and rear differentials. The major asset of this car is under the bonnet. Indeed, its WR engine was completely overhauled at the end of 2020. At the same time, the clutch was replaced and the turbo and radiator were restored. The running gear was dismantled and reconditioned. With its updated mechanics and its beautiful configuration, our mythical coupe is just waiting to get back on the road. It will ensure you a guaranteed immersion in the middle of the 1980s. Issues to note: Starter works but is unusually noisy / visible traces of a slight rear shock (old).
