1989 CADILLAC ALLANTE
Pininfarina design Mythical youngtimer Rare in Europe English registration title Vehicle on temporary importation Chassis n° 1G6VR3181KU101516 In the middle of the 1980s, Cadillac wanted to compete with the Mercedes SL in the sporty convertible segment. To do so, the American firm joined forces with the legendary Italian coachbuilder Pininfarina, who was responsible for the design part of the project. The car was presented in 1987 and very quickly became a resounding commercial failure. The reason for this was the high price and the fact that, as soon as it was launched, Mercedes had thoroughly revised the SL, with major technical advances. The organisation and the manufacturing process of the Allante is also very expensive and particular: the bodies are made in the Pininfarina workshops in Turin before being sent by plane to the production lines in Detroit. A financial disaster! The initial target of 6,000 units per year was never reached and the already legendary Allante died out in 1993 after 21,430 units. The file of the Cadillac Allante that we are presenting allows us to trace it back to 1996 in Florida, at the home of a certain Mr Naylor. A large number of American invoices are still present in the file of this car. It was exported to England in 1998 and its current owner bought it in 2013. Today, this car shows some important body defects. A paint veil seems to have been done about ten years ago, but the whole has aged very badly. Traces of corrosion, sometimes perforating, are to be deplored on the whole body and the underbody. The original rims were changed by one of the previous owners. The original burgundy leather interior is fairly well preserved, but there are some ageing defects on the plastics. Mechanically, the car runs quite well. The 4.5 litre V8 offers good revs and the gearbox works well. The braking system needs to be reviewed, however, and was only marginally functional during our test drive. The counters are one of the most attractive details of this car: their typical 1990s style is superb and allows the driver to be transported to another era. This is a very nice restoration project of a mythical youngtimer that is very rare on our continent.
