LÉGER FERNAND (1881-1955).
L.A.S. "FLeger" with Sketch, August 2, 1955; 3 pages in8 on blue paper (small split at fold repaired). Very nice letter about his painting. He returns to their conversation "around the little square table" [he sketches the scene, seen from above]... "The biting point is the history of the sketches "Pensée Française", and their success. Lefèvre's judgement is conclusive: there "you can feel the hand" but for me it is an old judgement dating from Impressionism - the taste of pochade painting, of flavour, of taste, of paint stains dripping on the canvas naturally it is the hand, the foot, whatever one wants. I am the opposite of that. I pay it, I paid it hard in my mechanical time. If my work starts out as a pochade, it's an essential first step. At that moment I have to choose one", which will develop. To enlarge the pochade does not interest him: "It is a small way, wrapped in seduction, taste, improvised, + Romanticism + Surrealism. Sprinkle with surprise, the surprising, the exciting - our good bourgeoisie exults. It is sensual - but we are far from the goal: objectBeautiful. Painting of small enjoyment, something like "making love". It's done quickly. I'm interested in the child"... The period surrounds him with well-made, well-executed elements: "I wanted to do as well - a magnificent plane propeller, [...] a beautiful stone picked up on the beach. I didn't want to copy that, but to do it as well. [...] The prices of these paintings will only later join those of the others, I know that. Everything has to be paid for [...] you have to know how to wait. It will come. The abstract painters at Denise René's are dry and cold, but I value them and look at them. But a day in a museum, apart from the great periods that precede the Italian Renaissance, is a wasted day"...
