GÉRICAULT Théodore (1791-1824). - Lot 93
GÉRICAULT Théodore (1791-1824). L.A.S. "T. G.", [end of December 1819], to Madame Horace VERNET; 2 pages in-8, addressed (a few small pinholes at the head). Nice letter about a portrait of a woman. Louise Vernet's upcoming departure will "reduce him to three months of silence. I therefore take advantage of these last moments to put your complaisance to the test once again by asking you to entrust me with some of Horace's pretty fashions [drawings of Horace Vernet's fashions engraved in the Journal des Dames et des Modes] they will be an indispensable help for a portrait of a woman I am going to do. As she is said to be pretty, it is only fair that I should make use of the most graceful work of this kind and that I should appear to be up to date with the latest fashions. I tried yesterday to remember a black hat that I had seen you wear without being able to grasp its shape. However, I must admit that some people recognized that I had wanted to represent Madame Burton [Aimée Pujol, Mrs. Adrien-Charles Burton, sister of Louise Vernet] which proves at least a family resemblance and that is already something. The little Indians were taken away from me before I had finished. The inexorable owner had no regard for the commitment I had made, so I will be reduced to doing anything else you please - elephants, lions, bears, dromedaries, camels. Order Madame and you will be served with alacrity and accuracy by the most devoted of your servants"...
