DUBUFFET JEAN (1901-1985). - Lot 76
DUBUFFET JEAN (1901-1985). L.A.S. "Jean Dubuffet", El Golea 5 February [1948], to Florence GOULD his "dear whimsical friend"; 1 1/2 pages in-4, envelope. Beautiful letter about his stay in the Algerian South. Dubuffet describes the visit of their neighbour, a rich gardener, "a great flute player and a great master of tricks": Salem cleaned the floor of their house made of fine sand brought from the desert and on which is thrown a high and loose wool carpet, then he took tea with them; he drank it abundantly ("tea is very expensive"), put some in his pocket while they were not looking at him, before protesting his friendship and thanking God... Dubuffet raves about the footprints in the sand, human and animal footprints: "you walk on this ground, all decorated with beautiful traces, trampled and re-trampled, as if it were a huge page of a draft notebook, it is a very interesting ground"... He also talks about a kind of checkers game played with stones and camel droppings, droppings which are also used to smoke the palm trees and as fuel. Date pits are also sold very well, to feed goats and camels. ... "Good weather is like foie gras, it only makes sense if it is intermittent and a bit rare. [...] Thanks to my work, my little doodles of paintings, thanks also to this so interesting ground, these feet in the sand, I don't get bored too much"...
