DELACROIX Eugène (1798-1863). 3 L.A.S. "Eug. Delacroix", [1851]; 3 1/2 pages in-8, address on 2nd. 28 January [1851]. "I have had a strained leg for eight or ten days because of a small abrasion on my foot that I have neglected, and already for a few days I have been unable to go out because of this silly indisposition. This happened to me at the beginning of a very large project I had started to work on and for which I have a lot of enthusiasm and which everything urges me to do immediately. Moreover, I had the sorrow of being detained at home during the illness that has just taken a person who was very dear to me and whose loss is one of those that cannot be repaired... Saturday 15th [February 1851], to his friend, the painter Alexandre-Nicolas BARBIER: "The jury will probably not be consulted for the reworking of the paintings, and in the case that it would be, there are several members, among whom I am, who would refuse this task. What we have decided has been executed all wrong so that we would have the responsibility again and the mortification of not having done what we consider proper. I intend to abstain in the same way for the jury of awards"... He will recommend it to a person of the administration: "I will have more chance to succeed in this way than as a juror"... December 16 [1851 ?]. "I can dispose of a work for the renewal of your exhibition, the subject of which interests me particularly because of my admiration for Mr BERRYER. If you want to send for the painting, it will be at your disposal from 10 to 4 every day. The subject is the Sybil showing the golden branch. The canvas is 60 at least and the frame is heavy; you will need a stretcher"...
