DELACROIX Eugène (1798-1863).
L.A.S. "E. Delacroix", Monday morning [29 January 1816], to Achille PIRON fils, rue Montmartre in Paris; 2 pages small in-4, address. "It is with a soul grieved with pain and repentance that I try to rejuvenate my pen to write to my dear friend. I have apologies to ask for, and as I need someone to forgive me, I am addressing you: for if I must speak truly, although you promised me that you would come yesterday, my porter found such a talent for confusing her speeches that it seemed to me that you or the one who had honoured me with his visit had not come alone. Hence the endless conjectures... I am therefore guilty, I accuse myself and ask for forgiveness, which will be granted to me when the reasons which kept me for half an hour too long are known... He invites him to come and see the play Manlius Capitolinus (by Antoine de Lafosse): "I know you are too fond of beautiful things to doubt that it will not smile on you", and he gives him an appointment "in the wooden gallery"... Lettres intimes (VI, p. 40).
