PROUST Marcel (1871-1922)
Set of 25 autograph letters signed to MADAME WILLIAMS AND HER HUSBAND, about 118 pages in-8 in ink, 9 envelopes kept. In 1906, Marcel Proust moved to 102, Boulevard Haussmann. Important correspondence addressed to Madame Williams (23 letters) and to her husband Monsieur Williams (3 letters), the writer's neighbours at this address. Most of the letters were written during the war, with Proust talking about his friends who were killed, Reynaldo Hahn who returned from the front, and his grief after the death of his secretary Alfred Agostinelli. He talks about his novel and his characters Swann and Monsieur de Charlus. ... "I fear that the unexpected activity this evening at midnight of my friend Reynaldo Hahn, who for the first time in 15 months had returned from the front and was entering battle, may have given you cause for concern" ...I was very moved to see her again" ...... "If I send you 3 copies (2 July issues) it is because unfortunately I can only have copies that have been torn up to paste fragments on the proofs of the 2nd volume which should then appear" ... ... "In Swann, one could be surprised that Swann always confided his wife to M de Charlus, presumed to be his lover... But in the June issue, you will see, because the first indication of M. de Charlus' vice appears there, that the reason why Swann knew he could entrust his wife to M. de Charlus was quite different! Exceptional correspondence by Marcel Proust.
