Amusing poem written by Guy de Maupassant when he was 18 years old, to be read at the banquet of the Lycée Corneille in Rouen, celebrating the Saint-Charlemagne: "Certainly, my good friends, I know nothing worse Than to make verses when one has nothing to say For nearly a month I have been waiting every day For an inspiration; but I am still waiting for it My verve has gone out, it must be rekindled, My poor mind is shivering and my muse has a cold Me, I sleep ...» This poem was published from this manuscript in Emmanuel's edition Vincent: Maupassant. Des Vers et Autres Poèmes. Rouen, 2001, pages 181-185.
