CHAR RENÉ (1907-1988)
Reunion of twenty autograph letters signed to Jean BÉLIAS and a photograph representing René CHAR, L'Isle-sur-Sorgue, Avignon, etc., February 26, 1979 - September 7, 1987. Set of 25 pages in-4 and in-8, envelopes kept. Friendly and trusting correspondence addressed to a friend of books who was in charge, in Paris, of the diffusion of the typographical impressions of PAB - and thus quite often of Char's collections - as well as, sometimes, when the occasion arose, of negotiating the sale of a manuscript of the poet. There are numerous allusions to the stays that Jean Bélias made at the latter's house in Isle-sur-Sorgue. "I will not see the Magritte exhibition [...] I was very saddened by Anne-Marie's death. My friendship for her was deep. I pity Jean Hugues [bookseller-publisher and gallery owner] [...]". (15.II.1979). "The exhibition satisfies the B.N. and the visitors [René Char: manuscripts illuminated by 20th century painters, Paris, Biblioth. nat., exhibition organized by Antoine Coron]. [...]. Pab has put out a nice souvenir in a direct text and two photographs by Mariette Lachaud, the collaborator of Braque. It is simple and moving ... [Mariette: Un souvenir, Pab, 1980; see above n° 30]" (21.II.1980). "Here is a little PAB that you may find a bit sketchy (as a poem). So I signed it in green, augur of spring [Le délassement de l'Aiguilleur. See above n° 78]" (16.XII.80). "I will bring you some PAB, don't worry about it... Love will ruin it before its time..." (3.VI.81). "I thank you for sending me the Loliée catalogue [...] Saw the GLM exhibition at the B.N. on the very day I arrived in Paris". (11.XI.81). "I had another fall a fortnight ago, very restrictive, because my whole skeleton suffered..." (15.IV.82). (15.IV.82). "La Pléiade is nearing its end and Campredon will not be too disappointing...". Encloses two cards relating to the Campredon hotel, at Isle-sur-Sorgue, where the René Char Museum-Library will be installed (5.VIII.82). "The Pléiade is selling very well and the press is numerous [...] [The completion of printing of the Works of R. Char in the Bibliothèque de la Pléiade is dated March 17, 1983]. The work of your protégée [Fanny Viollet] has dazzled Anne..." (17.V.83). Very warm greetings on a card with a coloured wood by Jean Hugo (22.XII.83). Recommends to Jean Bélias Benoît de Roux who seems to him "the talented successor of our friend P.A. Benoit". Attached a letter from Benoît de Roux to J. Bélias (22.V.85). "I will send you tomorrow by registered mail the 12 handwritten poems of Retour amont [...] I am starting a nasty dental treatment...". (20.I.85). "The copy destined for Mr. Rodocanachi is finished [...] Here is his composition". This is followed by a list of 15 manuscripts and various documents from the collection Les voisinages de Van Gogh (NRF, May 1985) added to the copy intended for André Rodocanachi, bibliophile and president of the museum-library René Char (2.IX.85). "Here the sun is friendly and rather crazy in its decisions. I propose to come to Paris in the next autumn. I will be very happy to see you again after such a long time. But my health is not always constant..." (7.IX.87). Attached is a photograph of René Char on a summer's day in the countryside with a panama hat, annotated by him on the back: "Vaucluse 1959" (138 x 66 mm).
