1964 ALFA ROMEO GIULIA 1600 TI SUPER
Only 501 units built Rare example delivered new in France, 3rd hand ! High quality restoration and preparation French registration title Chassis n° AR 595 311 The sporty Alfa Romeo Giulia sedan first appeared under the name Giulia TI in 1962 with a 1,570 cc engine, six months before the Ford Cortina GT which was to be its main competitor in the battle of fast touring cars. Well aware of the saying “win on Sunday, sell on Monday”, Alfa Romeo developed the TI Super in 1964, an even more accomplished version designed to make the Milanese firm shine in racing. Lightened by 90 kg thanks to the use of aluminum for the hood, trunk lid and door linings, the TI Super also swapped its glass rear window for a Plexiglas one. An increase in power to 110 hp was achieved by using the Giulia Sprint Speciale’s engine, still a 1,570 cc aluminum twin overhead camshaft, but this time fed by two Weber 45 DCOE carburetors. The brakes were reinforced by discs hidden behind the four Campagnolo magnesium wheels, made especially for this model. Light, powerful and agile, it will quickly prove to be the ultimate weapon! According to the Alfa Romeo documentation center, this car, whose chassis number is AR 595 311, is one of the very few examples delivered new in Paris on the 30th of April 1964. Its certificate of origin attests that it was left the Arese factory on the 28th of April of the same year. Having never left France, it would, after verification with the registers of the prefecture, remain in the hands of its first owner until the 14th of October 1994, date on which Guy Duperche acquires it. Well known on the historical scene, he undertook the first restoration of the beautiful Italian car with the help of the Rotondi garage in Fresnes, which was still in business at the time. He then drove it in numerous events on the historical calendar, including the Tour de France Auto, the Grand Prix de l’Age d’Or in Montlhéry and then in Dijon, before hanging up his helmet at the age of 73 and leaving us a few years later... Through the intermediary of the French dealer Franco Lembo, based in Reims and specialist of the brand, it will then join the collection of its third and current owner in 2011. In his turn, he will have the car fully restored and without cost limit in order to participate in the Tour Auto Optic 2ooo the same year. Aesthetically beautiful, the car is not less powerful. The engine (mounted with Webers 45 DCOE 69) is very good and the five speed gearbox is a delight of precision. The running gear is perfectly tuned and gives the car a playful behavior without ever catching the driver off guard. Only the brakes, although they ensure a perfect bite, pull the car to the right and deserve an adjustment. Apart from that, it’s a no-fault car! Accompanied by its original reconditioned seats and rebuilt front and rear bumpers, this Alfa Romeo Giulia TI Super is the perfect vehicle for all collectors or gentleman drivers wishing to participate in the most beautiful historic races of the calendar. Let’s remember that the Giulia TI Super has to its credit a 5th place in the general classification of the Tour de France 1963, a 4th place in the general classification (1st of its category) of the 6 hours of Nürburgring 1963 and a 2nd place in the general classification of the 24 hours of Spa 1965... no less!
