1962 PANHARD PL 17 Grand Standing
No reserve Grand Standing finish Easy to recondition Popular French car, not to be missed French registration title Chassis n° 2108160 Presented at the 1959 Paris Motor Show, the Panhard PL17 replaces the Dyna Z. A simple evolution of its predecessor, its lines have been updated by Louis Bionier, while keeping the central cell of the Z. Its name refers to the initials of the founders of the Panhard and Levassor brand and the number 17 is the sum of 5 fiscal HP + 6 seats + 6 liters per 100 km, and sounds better to Citroën’s ears, since the brand with the chevrons gained ownership of the oldest French brand (first as a savior ... then as a gravedigger) in 1955. Quai d’Ivry, the financial crisis is serious, and under the hood neither, nothing will be revolutionized: mechanically, the PL 17 still offers the 851cc flat-twin developing 42 hp. At its presentation, the new Panhard was applauded and transfigured, the French brand succeeding in this feat “making the new with the old”. Panhard will offer several versions of its PL 17 including a sedan, a convertible, a station wagon and a van. Original car by its motorization and its very aerodynamic drawing for the time, the PL 17 knew a respectable success. Production lasted from June 1959 to May 1965 with a total of just over 166,000 units built. Although it has an L4 gray card (and a chassis identification plate), the PL 17 we offer is a Type L1, with its suicide doors and its characteristic dashboard. With a midnight blue color quite close to the original Iraq Blue reference, the car also benefits from the very luxurious and sixties Grand Standing finish: the exterior features many polished accessories and embellishments, while inside, the leather imitation upholstery offers two shades of light grey and blue. Under the hood, the famous 1709 twin-cylinder engine, mated to a 3407 gearbox, matches a 1960 PL 17. The car, repainted in an amateur way, looks good, despite some body defects. The floors show some surface rust, the comodos and plastic trim show the passage of time and most of the door seals are dry or cracked, but this L1 will allow its new owner to enjoy an emblematic French popular car, offering six seats, after a general overhaul (including the brakes, inoperative the day of our test), for a very reasonable budget.
