TRAN PHUC DUYEN (1923-1993)
Les biches, 1951 Lacquer with gold highlights, signed and dated lower left, stamped on the back 45 x 57 cm - 17 3/4 x 22 7/16 in. The youngest child in a family of six brothers and sisters, Trần Phúc Duyên was born in 1923 in Hanoi. He has always been an artist at heart and joined the Hanoi School of Fine Arts in 1942, where he specialized in lacquerware. His talent was very quickly recognised and commissions flooding in, notably from French civil servants, bourgeois families and private companies. In 1950, his know-how was distinguished by the government’s choice to offer one of his lacquers in the form of a folding screen to Pope Pius XII and kept in the Vatican Museum. In 1954, like many former students of the Hanoi School of Fine Arts, Trần Phúc Duyên moved to France where he studied under Jean Souverbie at the Beaux-Arts de Paris. As the practice of lacquer painting is subject to various factors, the artist develops his technique to adapt to European materials. Moreover, painting becomes more and more integrated into his work. The numerous exhibitions in which he has participated throughout France, Spain, Switzerland but also Canada testify to his multiple talents and his fame throughout the world.
