Vũ Cao Đàm (1908-2000)
Saint Paul de Vence, 1963 Oil on canvas, signed and dated lower right 92 x 60 cm - 36 1/4 x 23 5/8 in. South of France dazzled with brightness, lulled by cicadas, offers a panorama dominated by an azure blue, and was a land of exile appreciated by 20th century artists. Perched on a rocky spur, majestically overlooking the hinterland of Nice, the small village of Saint Paul de Vence is a favorite. Sensitive to the mildness of the Mediterranean climate but also fascinated by the undeniable charm of this village, many artists such as Matisse or Modigliani have stayed in the emblematic inn of La Colombe d’or. Chagall spent nineteen years of his life there, now resting permanently in the village cemetery. Born in Hanoi, arriving in Paris, exploring Béziers, then Vence before settling in Saint Paul de Vence, Vũ Cao Đàm is one of those artists to have taken up residence in this Midi. Our painting illustrates the influence of the region on the artist’s style. Perfectly free from the teaching provided by his professors at the Hanoi School of Fine Arts, Vũ Cao Đàm distinguished himself from his peers by his choice of subject matter. He is one of the few to represent his adopted land. The very singular luminosity is captured under the agile brushstroke of the painter who imposes himself as a great colorist. Playing with contrasts with his palette, blue dominates, a tribute to this color synonymous with the region. More than a simple realistic representation of landscape, Vũ Cao Đàm shows an innovative vision where the touch begins to fragment. In 1963, playing with a contrast between the realistically painted village and a background with an abstract touch - in the manner of another exiled artist: Zao Wou Ki - the artist reminds us that his style is constantly evolving, and will not be locked into a single artistic trend.
