Pham Hau (1903-1995)
Scène d'aquarium avec les poissons rouges d'abondance, circa 1950-1960 Lacquer with gold highlights and eggshell, signed lower right 200 x 100,5 cm - 78 3/4 x 39 1/2 in. Nature is one of Phạm Hậu’s main sources of inspiration and the representation of goldfish - nicknamed “abundance” - has particularly stood out. Carrying a strong positive symbol, goldfish is synonymous with wealth, peace, love but also hope. In Fonds sous-marin et poissons rouges, Phạm Hậu brilliantly captures aquatic life using innovative materials. Thus, coral comes to life thanks to eggshell material while seaweed stirs under the fineness of gilding. The incredible skills of the master lacquerer allows the diversity of the underwater world to be accurately reproduced. The swimming goldfish let out small bubbles of oxygen, the crab melts in the quicksand, the Bernard l’Hermitte peacefully vegetates. The crimson background highlights the majesty of this luxuriant vegetation populated by its aquatic vertebrates. The variety of tones and the diversity of material participate in magnifying the composition and make Phạm Hậu one of the greatest lacquerers of his time, symbolizing himself the art of lacquer.
