BERTRAND HENRI (1773-1844) GÉNÉRAL,GRAND-MARÉCHAL DU PALAIS, FIDÈLE COMPAGNON DE NAPOLÉON À ELBE ET SAINTE-HÉLÈNE
L.A.S., Épernay 18 March [1814], to his wife Fanny BERTRAND; 2 1/4 pages in-4 (trace of tab with slight browning). Beautiful letter from the French Campaign. He was sad not to hear from her, fearing "some suffering of mind or pregnancy. I would like so much to know you happy, at least as much as circumstances allow. The Emperor has an iron character, he is still as you saw him in Paris at the time of such a great crisis - what a face! I think, as you do, that there is nothing good to be hoped for from people who have no heart - too bad for them. I forgot to tell you that S.M. had appointed as his aide-de-camp one of the former officers of his Regiment whom the hazard and the war made him meet at Soissons".... A neoclassical drawing in graphite is attached; and 8 L.A.S. by Adolphe Aderer, Pierre-Jean de Béranger, Louis Bertrand, Alexandre Bida, Georges Courteline, Jean Galtier-Boissière, Paul de Kock, Louis Ulbach.
