[...] Strasbourg, F. G. Levrault, Paris, Le Normant, 1816-1830. 71 volumes in-8 (215 x 135 mm), 60 of text and 11 of plates. Half dark blue basane, cold-stamped roulette framing the boards, smooth titled spine, tomé and decorated with gilt boxes, irons and fillets, marbled edges (period binding). Second edition of the first five volumes and first edition of the following ones. Work published under the direction of Frédéric Cuvier, on the initiative of the Levrault bookshop of Strasbourg. It contains contributions by Jussieu, Lamarck, Dumont de Sainte-Croix, Laurent, Brongniart, etc. Important work illustrated with 1218 (out of 1220) plates in black and for the most part carefully coloured at the time, engraved under the direction of the naturalist Pierre-Jean-François Turpin, depicting mammals, rodents, carnivores, cetaceans, plants, birds, minerals, crustaceans, etc. Turpin calls upon the painter Prêtre, and numerous engravers such as Massard, Legrand and Coutant. The text volumes contain folding tables and some hors-texte. Note that the volume of tables (the 72nd) that many copies of this edition contain is here incorporated at the beginning of each volume of plates. (Freckles; condition of bindings, corners dulled)
