François Joseph Edouard de CAMPIGNEULLES (1826-1879)
Exceptional collection of forty vintage albumin prints, from waxed paper negatives, contained in a cloth portfolio with double internal flaps, marked on the first cover "ED. DE CAMPIGNEULLES - VOYAGE EN ORIENT" and by the initials "O.S." (Olivier de Séguin) surmounted by a count's crown on the second cover, all in gilt letters (edges partly detached). A native of Douai, in the north of France, Edouard de CAMPIGNEULLES has only been known to specialists in early photography for about fifteen years, and little is known about him other than that he spent time in the Near East between 1857 and 1858, visiting Egypt and Syria in particular, and that he was an archeology enthusiast. His mastery of framing, where he excelled in low-angle shots, as well as the finesse of the rendering of his prints, suggest that he may have been trained in France before his departure for the Near East by an established photographer, who may have been Gustave Le Gray. From what we have learned from one of Olivier de Séguin's descendants, he would have met Edouard de CAMPIGNEULLES in Egypt, and could have accompanied him on his journey, perhaps producing this collection on the spot. Edouard de CAMPIGNEULLES has since been included, with a special note, in the book Les primitifs de la photographie, 1843-1860 edited by Sylvie Aubenas and Paul-Louis Roubert, published by Gallimard for the BNF, Paris 2010 Print formats, signatures and captions The prints measure an average of 27.5 x 33 cm, with variations in width and height ranging from a few millimetres to a centimetre The prints are mounted on card stock measuring 42 x 52.5 cm (38) and 47 x 61 cm (2). A number of the mounts show pitting in the margins over a few centimetres, away from the prints. A small number of prints have imperfections in the skies at the top. Half of the prints have Olivier de Séguin's signature, numbering and captions on the back of the cardboard.
