SUAREZ Jean-François (15?-16?) jésuite, philosophe et théologien, professeur au collège de Clermont à Paris.
2 L.A.S. "Jehan Fran. Suares" and "Jehan Francois Suares" addressed to his sister, Hélène de SUAREZ, in Avignon. Rome 1590-1591. 1 page in-fol., each with address on verso, seal under paper to the 1st (small hole and a missing corner repaired without loss of text to the 2nd). 6 December 1590. The desire of his "well-loved sister" for his letters, and his own to satisfy them, "did not give me leave to stay longer in silence, how much the writing which I do every day of three hours in Theology could rightly dispense me from it; Fearing that I might fall ill, into which many fall here because of writing too much, I am sure that your charity, woven into a prudent wisdom, will excuse me if I write to you little and rarely. I also want you to have the assurance that I am written in the heart of my heart more immortally than in marble; especially as I continue to be a devotee; and that you frequent the sacraments, and preachings, by which I make you worthy of being immortalized in Heaven, where I desire to see you, and to be seen by you in the celestial court, blessed, and praised without end with the celestial citizens this sovereign, and divine majesty, which I beg fountain of all good, to flow in your soul a stream of blessings... He adds "the news of Gregoire XIIII eslu yesterday"... February 23, 1591. He rejoices in "your holy, and devout resolutions, and your constancy in the divine service", where "rest, and the true contentment of the Soul is found. The pleasures and recreations of the worldly bring a thousand and one poisonous bitterness to the heart, which kills our Soul"... Etc.
