P.S. "Napoleon", Bayonne June 24, 1808; countersigned by CAMBACÉRÈS, Arch-Chancellor of the Empire; vellum broadside partly engraved with the header Napoleon by the Grace of God Emperor of the French, King of Italy, Protector of the Confederation of the Rhine... with eagle lettering, painted coat of arms (without seal; tear at bottom without missing). Letters of nobility for General Dominique COMPANS (1769-1845), "General of Division, Chief of the General Staff of the fourth corps of the great army, Grand Officer of the Legion of Honor, and Member of the Electoral College of the dept. of the Haute Garonne, born in Saliès", granting him the title of "Count of Our Empire", transmissible to his direct descendants. The coat of arms, "of agent fretté of six lances of azure, the quarter of the Counts gone out of the army brochant on the whole", is painted in the upper left corner of the patent. In the back, apostilles signed by LAPLACE, chancellor of the Senate, and the baron DUDON, general secretary of the Council of the Seal of the titles. A P.S. from LOUIS XVIII, countersigned by Count Dupont, letters of knighthood of the Military Order of Saint-Louis for General Compans, June 1, 1814, is attached.
