Charter on parchment, Arras 29 April 1147; parchment 26 x 18.5 cm

Donation by the abbey of Anchin of an altar to the abbey of Saint-Denis, mentioning Suger
ALVISE (c. 1070-1148) was prior of the abbey of Saint-Vaast in Arras, and appointed in 1112 abbot of the abbey of Saint-Sauveur in Anchin (in the present-day department of Nord); appointed in 1131 bishop of Arras, he took part in the second crusade with Louis VII the Pious, and died at Philippopolis (Plovdiv) in Thrace on 6 September 1148, one year after this charter.
This charter is quoted by Dom Michel Félibien in his Histoire de l'abbaye royale de Saint-Denys en France (Paris, Frédéric Léonard, 1706, "Recueil de pièces justificatives", pièce CXXXVII, page cvii).
Alvise, bishop of Arras, donates an altar in the name of the abbey of Anchin, to embellish the church of the blessed martyr Saint Denis, one of the most eminent churches of Gaul, which Brother SUGER contributes to enlarge and decorate.
"In nomine Patris et Filii et Spiritus Sancti. A[men]. Ego Alvisus Dei miseratione
Scientes igitur nobilissimam beati Dionysii martyris ecclesiam prae caeteris Galliae ecclesiis eminere, & abbatem ipsius decori domus
Nos siquidem hujus paginae auctoritatem ratam & stabilem permanere volentes, in praesentia subscriptorum testium eam confirmavimus. S. Domni Lucae
