AKIRA TANAKA (1918-1982)
Le parasol rouge, 1972 Oil on canvas, signed lower right, countersigned, titled and dated on reverse 130 x 161.8 cm 51 3/16 x 63 25/64 in. Born in 1918 in Japan, Akira Tanaka settled permanently in France in 1959. An unclassifiable artist, Tanaka traveled to Europe, particularly to Italy, Spain and Portugal, where he completed his Parisian inspirations. Attached to representing everyday people, modest characters with occupations that have practically disappeared for some of them, Tanaka manages to capture in paint the characters of these passers-by, these craftsmen and these anonymous people. Tanaka often varies the format, but always remains faithful to his coarse linen canvas. His works are sometimes dark, but also colorful and populated by a heterogeneous crowd. This is the case with Red Parasol, from 1972. This work takes the viewer into a discussion between very diverse characters, listening to one of them speak. As the details and expressions in this composition prove, Akira Tanaka is capable of creating works that are never fully revealed at first glance. The public will have to return several times to a careful observation to discover all the subtleties of this painting which abounds in subtle details. Finally, Red Parasol expresses Tanaka's very accomplished art of color and its effects, very visible in the clothes of the characters, the shades of the sky as well as the umbrella on this canvas. The other works that we present are also very striking either by their representativeness of the artist's style, as are The Afternoon, The Bench or The Lily of the Valley Merchant; or by their singularity and their rarity in the theme, as in The Hunt or The Battery.
