NGUYEN KHANG (1911-1989)
Tam Cam, 1983 Lacquer, signed lower right 63.5 x 42 cm - 25 x 16 1/2 in. The very popular tale in Vietnam Tâm and Càm presents many analogies with the one of Cinderella. Through the story of two half-sisters, various themes such as jealousy and the quest for happiness are explored. The lacquerware presented for sale shows beautifully an epic moment of the story. Tâm’s stepmother - who is also Càm’s mother - sends the girls out to fish for shrimp and promises to reward the best fisherwoman with a red yếm, a traditional Vietnamese garment. Tâm, accustomed to the arduous domestic tasks given daily by her mother-in-law, dutifully performs and very quickly her basket fills up. Her half-sister Càm prefers to have fun in the water, then realizing that she might not receive the reward, decides to trap her elder sister. Feigning benevolence, she advises her to wash her hair soiled by fishing, in order to avoid certain reprimands. Càm takes advantage of this moment of inattention to get the catch of her elder sister. From this episode are born many adventures which will give rhythm to the life of the two half-sisters. Although Nguyen Khang is a renowned artist, few of his works are presented for sale on the market today, and even more rarely in France. This lacquerware was later presented and authenticated by the artist’s daughter, as evidenced by the certificate attached.
