VU CAO DAM (1908-2000)
Cavalière, 1963 Oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left 60 x 81.5 cm -23 5/8 x 32 in. Cavalière is a remarkable synthesis of Vu Cao Dam’s work from the 1960s. Created in 1963, this painting brings together the artist’s most emblematic sources of inspiration. Composed of two horsemen, Vu Cao Dam recalls the strong symbolism surrounding horses in Asia. Evoking prestige but also power, they have been represented many times by the artist. The human figure, whether female or male, is also a subject inseparable from the master’s art. Their long silhouettes wear the traditional Vietnamese dress with grace while their slightly rounded faces are full of softness. This work bears witness to the artistic evolution of the artist from the 1950s, marked by his move to the south of France. Definitely adopting oil, a Western medium par excellence, Vu Cao Dam plays with his brush to bring more nuance and a certain modeling. The palette dominated by blue tones discreetly recalls his accomplice Chagall who inspired him. Making this brushed touch a real asset, the artist does not represent a figurative background but subtly draws it up in a very avant-garde way that could evoke the compositions of his contemporary Zao Wou-Ki.
