ALIX AYMÉ (1894-1989)
Les toits de Yunnanfou Oil on canvas, located on the back 60.3 x 69.3 cm - 23 3/4 x 27 1/4 in. Curious and tireless traveler, Alix Aymé dedicated her career to transcribe in her art the particularities of cultures she explored. Mastering lacquer, charcoal and oil, she has sought to faithfully recreate this South-East Asia through colourful landscapes and also portraits of the natives. Among her travels, the heterogeneous beauty of the landscapes of Yunnan and more particularly of the city of Yunnanfu has affected her work. This city - an ancient capital of the Chinese province - crossed by the Yunnan railway is known for its lively market and its many pagodas. Under its charm, Alix Aymé describes it in these words: “ My enthusiasm is no base alloy. Yunnanfu seems to me the most beautiful city in the world”. This emotion felt while facing the landscape brings depth and authenticity to Toits de Yunann Fou. The precepts learned from her Nabi master (enlever virgule) Maurice Denis, allow her to render this profusion of colours, which she describes as follows: «Episcopal violets, cardinal reds and all the oranges poured down the streets paved with large stones”. While the artist masters the power of colour, she also demonstrates a modernist vision. Adopting a low-angle point of view, she captures the liveliness of the alleys but also the quietness of the surrounding mountains. This technique used by great artists such as Braque the cubist, Bonnard the nabi but also Caillebotte the impressionist, underlines Alix Aymé’s capacity for synthesis. Thanks to a true sensitivity but also to a know-how crossing different artistic currents, she shows a delightful view of this thousand-year-old city.
