VAN CLEEF & ARPELS
PAIR OF "CIGOGNE" PINS, Brilliant and baguette cut diamonds, calibrated rubies, 18k (750) gold, 950 platinum, Signed and numbered, hallmarked, Art Deco period, Length : 8 cm approx. - Pb. 23.4 gr. A diamond, ruby, gold and platinum pair of brooch Made after the war, these brooches Van Cleef & Arpels with the effigy of storks are a "special order". Godmother of a unit of the stork squadron, the grandmother of the current owner was eager to wear the distinction and ordered from the prestigious House of Place Vendôme. A combat aeronautical unit of the French army, the Stork Squadron owes its name to a key stage in its history. Created in 1912 and commanded by Lieutenant Bellenger, it became the responsibility of Lieutenant Bellemois during a mission in Alsace. As Bellenger bade farewell to the pilots, he compared their imminent arrival in Belfort to that of the storks heralding spring. This symbol would remain and become the insignia worn by the unit. Storks with wings spread in the wind, with high wings, in flight with low wings... the postures of the storks are various and each one designates a unit. On this pair of brooches, their posture, called "wings folded in dive", is chosen in June 1916 to represent the SPA 26 squadron of which the grandmother of the seller was godmother. It will be from then on named "Stork of Saint Galmier". BIJ2021
