CARTIER
PAGODE" diamond and jadeite brooch engraved with two scenes of a bird perched on a branch. 18k (750) gold and 950 platinum. Signed Cartier Paris and numbered, circa 1920. Hallmark of master Droguet, Henri. H. : 6 cm - Pb. 25 gr. To note : restorations - two white stones announced A diamond, jadeite, gold and platinum brooch "The jadeite... Fine and opaque stone of white, grey, green, mauve, yellow, brown and even black coloring, it is used by Cartier since the beginning of the XXth century... "Jade is one of the richest materials available. It allows the creation of fascinating jewelry whose primary value may not approach that of expensive gems, diamonds, emeralds or rubies, but whose nuances, reflections, internal life, soul in a word are much more evocative, how much more moving. For too long, jade has been regarded in Europe as a second-rate stone. In China, it is the stone of kings. It represents preciousness, value and virtue. As one analyzes the Middle Kingdom, one begins to love more and more the stone where the whole range of greens is reflected and which gives to the flesh it adorns an aspect of strange and somewhat immaterial elegance. These lines, written by a Vogue columnist in 1924, illustrate the craze for jade that swept the West between the two wars. At that time, the use of ancient Chinese jade by Cartier increased considerably because it was through this stone that the Chinese soul was reputed to be expressed. Jadeite thus became the material of choice to evoke China or to produce an object in the Far East taste... The shades of jadeite range from emerald green to pale green. All are used by Cartier without restriction." Cartier Objets d'Exception, by Olivier Bachet and Alain Cartier
