RICHELIEU Armand-Jean du Plessis, cardinal de (1585-1642)
L.S. "Le card de Richelieu", Abbeville June 24, 1641, to Claude BOUTHILLIER, Superintendent of Finances; 1 page in-fol., address, red wax seals with the arms on red silks (slightly effrangé on one edge). Siege of Aire-sur-la-Lys (to be taken on July 26th). He tells him that "the enemies, numbering fifteen to sixteen thousand men commanded by the Cardal Infant himself, did not present themselves to attack the circumvalation of Aire, after having remained in battle for a long time within range of the musket of the entrenchment, found it good to withdraw, leaving on the square 8 or 10 miles of facines that they had prepared to fill the gap, plank forces and two or three hundred soldiers as prisoners that they had enyvrir de bran de vin for their oster the cognoissance of the peril where they wanted to precipitate them. Enemies withdrawing have taken the route of St Omer. The siege is going very well, and I hope that with God's blessing the King will be pleased with it on the 15th of July."
