SAINT-EXUPÉRY Antoine de (1900-1944)
TAPUSCRIT with corrections, additions and autograph sketches, Sustentation, [circa 1938-1939]; title and 9 pages in-4, double carbon on perforated paper. Rare technical text, illustrated with 4 sketches, with autograph additions. 4 technical pencil sketches on pages 1, 4, 5 and 6. About ten autograph corrections or additions, including an important final addition of 20 lines entitled: "Remark IV". Saint-Exupéry was always interested in mechanics. After training as a pilot during his military service in 1921, and then entering the aerospace industry, he filed numerous patents in the field of aeronautics. Around 1938, he became particularly interested in aerodynamics and designed propulsion and lift systems, i.e. systems for keeping an aircraft in the air by the action of currents on a wing. This typed text is contemporary to his research and the patents he filed in 1939. His drawings, traced with a fine point in black ink, explain the circulation of currents around a wing. The author explains the principles of his invention, which aims to increase fuel efficiency by making special use of the effects of outside air on the combustion and propulsion system of the aircraft.
