L.A. and L.A.S. "P. Mérimée", Paris October 1852, to Albert STAPFER, and original DRAWING, [1857] ; 4 and 4 pages in-4, and 26 x 21 cm. Beautiful set presenting the scholar and the draftsman. 52 rue de Lille 5 October. He found the parchment on his way back from tour. "Mr de Montaiglon is unfortunately in England, but I had fun last night reading this scribble and here is my translation. A few words I underlined leave me in doubt, but next Friday I will raise them with the help of the Academy's doctrines. [...] I don't doubt that this cooking Latin will embarrass you a bit, but except for a few words which I think are worth giving you the meaning, I like to believe you'll understand with a bit of attention". He explains a few Latin words, then gives the complete transcription of this charter of September 10, 1638 by the bishop of Étampis, concerning the church of Talcy: "Leonorius d'Estampis Dei gratia"...- October 14. Mérimée sends a translation in haste, having collated the text with her confrere Guérard: "There is no doubt that the lower part of the church should be understood as the western part of the nave, if the church of Talcy is regularly oriented". He explains the word orgya or orgya, "an ancient measure particular to the Blésois" . His translation of the charter into French follows... Original DRAWING in pencil on Ministry of War letterhead, representing a lady in a ball gown, annotated with another hand: "Parisian fashions: winter season of 1857. Drawn by Mr Prosper Merimed during a meeting of the commission set up by the Emperor to put Napoleon I's political papers in order".
