MALLARMÉ Stéphane (1842-1898)
L.A.S. "Stéphane Mallarmé", Valvins 20 August 1887, in Camille de SAINTE-CROIX; 4 pages in-8 with a thumbnail on the last page (burnished paper, some cracks and fold marks). Nice commentary by Contempler (Albert Savine, 1887). "It is, like the other one, a particularly scratched book! The presumptuous genre that wanted to replace the poem and everything else, without the prodigious shortcuts of thought and verse, or the Novel, deflates itself, and far-sighted writers bring back to the Memoirs, which alone retain its primal grace and strength, their prose. You seem to me to be of the moment even in this, with ancient sounds and literary soil possessed almost by you alone! In particular, that in some life you animated your so interesting figures, we can feel them, the finished pages, depending on a book, while being up to a miracle! This is to the greatest glory of the written word, which they do not have the impudence to deny in order to wallow within us. Here is what is subtle! I mean to say that we enjoy at the same time and in an excellent dosage, your high powers of recreation and your rare qualities of style if in the very genius of the language and masterly rhythm, all this being one: this act of writing, of which you speak in your preface and which is the other human act than loving! Correspondence (éd. B Marchal), n° 834, p. 651
